JR北海道では札幌〜室蘭・旭川間が電化されている以外は非電化区間が長く、都市間連絡特急は気動車が中心です。283 系をはじめとする振り子式気動車は、在来線では最速レベルの表定速度を誇ります。一方で、長大ローカル線も多く抱え、経営の課題になっています。
