Asahikawa Electric Railway was the northest electric railway until 1973.Now all the lines are closed, but two stocks are preserved in a museum and a community center. It linked Asahikawa-Yojo in Asahikawa with Higashikawa in Higashikawa Town and Higashi-Asahikawa in Asahikawa. Although the line ran in roads, its substantial high-floor vehicles looked like railway cars rather than street trams. Two-axle cars predominated before the war, but a fire in 1949 destroyed almost all the powered cars, and bogie-equipped MoHa Series 100 cars were built as replacements. Eighteen-metre MoHa Series 1000 cars were also built in 1955. The surrounding area continues to prosper as Asahikawa grows, but increasing car use reduced railway patronage, and all the lines closed in 1973.
More than thirty years after closure, the following two cars could be seen as of 2007. MoHa 103: Higashikawa Local History Museum, 1-16-2 Higashimachi, Higashikawa Town. From Asahikawa Station, take an Asahikawa Electric Railway bus bound for Higashikawa, about forty minutes, departing hourly. The museum opens on Saturdays only from 1 May to 30 June and 1 September to 3 November, and daily except Mondays from 1 July to 31 August; opening hours are 10:00–16:00.
MoHa 1001: Higashi-Asahikawa Community Centre, 544 Kamihyomura, Higashi-Asahikawa, Asahikawa. From Asahikawa Station, take an Asahikawa Electric Railway bus bound for Asahiyama Zoo, about thirty minutes, departing every twenty minutes, or walk ten minutes from Higashi-Asahikawa on the Sekihoku Main Line. These access and opening details are the original 2007 record.
