特急運転は国鉄時代にキハ80(キハ82系)によって始まりましたが、同車は元々寒地向けではなく、故障が多発しました。このため後に製造されたキハ183系は厳重な寒地対策が施されました。JR北海道になってからはキハ281・283・261系が投入されています。フラノエクスプレスなどのジョイフルトレインは一時ほどの存在感を示していません。
Limited-express services began in the JNR era with KiHa 80 (KiHa Series 82), but these cars were not originally designed for cold regions and suffered frequent failures. The later KiHa Series 183 therefore received extensive cold-weather protection. Under JR Hokkaido, KiHa Series 281, 283 and 261 were introduced. Excursion trains such as Furano Express no longer have the presence they once had.
