1997年には宗谷本線に定期特急列車は無く、キハ400・キハ480による急行宗谷が代表的な優等列車でした。現在ではキハ261系によって特急化されています。沿線は雄大な自然が広がりますが、稚内は最北の街としてにぎわいを見せていました。
In 1997, the Soya Main Line had no regularly scheduled limited expresses, and the Soya express formed of KiHa 400 and KiHa 480 was a representative faster service. These services have now been upgraded to limited expresses using KiHa Series 261. Magnificent natural scenery stretches along the line, while Wakkanai was lively as Japan's northernmost city.
