The KiHa 140 family was created by fitting engines to Series 51 coaches to convert them into diesel cars, principally for the Sassho Line. KiHa 141 and KiHa 142 use 250 PS engines, while KiHa 143 has a 450 PS engine. KiHa 141 and KiHa 142 carry DT22 bogies recovered from KiHa 22 cars, whereas KiHa 143 has newly built bolsterless bogies. The unpowered KiSaHa 144 retains the bogies used in its OHaFu 51 coach days. To increase capacity on the Sassho Line, which grew rapidly with commuter and school traffic around Sapporo, fourteen KiHa 141, fifteen KiHa 142, eleven KiHa 143 and four KiSaHa 144 cars were built or converted. KiHa 150 is a lightweight diesel car introduced by JR Hokkaido, with a steel body resembling JR East KiHa 110. Air-conditioned original-subseries cars went to the Furano Line, while non-air-conditioned 100-subseries cars went to the mountainous section of the Hakodate Main Line.
