Hokkaido's local diesel trains include the coach-converted KiHa Series 141, JNR's KiHa 54 and JR Hokkaido's KiHa 150. Series 141 conversions began in 1990 using Series 51 coaches, while the stainless-steel KiHa 54-500 was built in 1986 with two 250 PS engines. Introduced in 1993, the steel-bodied KiHa 150 has a 450 PS engine and served the Furano Line and mountainous Hakodate Main Line.
