キハ40系気動車は日本国有鉄道（国鉄）が開発した車両です。旧型のキハ10系を置き換えるため、1970年代に多くの車両が導入されました。北海道向けのキハ40形100番台は、二重窓とデッキを備えています。
DMU Series 40 (called kiha 40) are developed by JNR, Japan National Railway. Many cars are inroduced in 1970s to replace older DMU 10 series. Sub-series 40-100 for Hokkaido are equipped with double windows and decks.
