731系電車は1996年、キハ201系気動車は1997年に営業運転を始めた札幌圏向けの3両編成です。車体・内装・制御装置を共通化し、電化区間で電車と気動車が連結してともに動力を出す協調運転を可能にしました。ステンレス車体に片側3扉とロングシートを備え、半自動扉やエアカーテンで、デッキのない客室の寒さ対策をしています。
Series 731 electric trains entered service in 1996, followed by KiHa Series 201 diesel trains in 1997. Shared bodywork, interiors and control systems allow these three-car trains to run coupled together on electrified routes, both providing traction power. Stainless-steel bodies, three doors per side and longitudinal seating improve boarding, with semi-automatic doors and air curtains protecting the open interior from cold air.
