Series 711 is the first rolling stock in Hokkaido. To keep warmth during the winter, the windows are doubled and doors and rooms are separated with inner doors. JNR built the series from 1967. It has two doors per side, enclosed vestibules and double windows to cope with Hokkaido's cold. Only the 100 subseries built from 1980 survives, with mixed transverse and longitudinal seating and a third door added to some driving trailers. Although classified as suburban trains, it is a valuable example retaining the two-door, enclosed-vestibule style of JNR express trains.
