721系はJR北海道が1988年から製造した、札幌圏向けの交流近郊形電車です。ステンレス車体に片側3扉を設け、転換クロスシートと冷房を備える一方、冬の保温のため乗降口のデッキを残しています。函館本線・千歳線・室蘭本線の近郊区間で使われ、快速「エアポート」用には指定席のuシートも設けられました。
JR Hokkaido Series 721 is an AC suburban train built from 1988 for the Sapporo area. Its stainless-steel body has three doors per side, reversible transverse seating and air-conditioning, with enclosed entrance vestibules retaining warmth in winter. It has served suburban sections of the Hakodate, Chitose and Muroran Main Lines, including reserved u-seat accommodation for Rapid Airport services.
