東北・上越新幹線は、1982年に開業しました。それまでの東海道・山陽新幹線が一体的に運営されているのに対し、初めて独立した線区として開業しました。寒冷地を走るため、雪と寒さへの装備が厳重になされています。在来線を改軌した山形・秋田新幹線に直通するため、一部の列車は車体のサイズが小さくなっています。
The Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen opened in 1982. While the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen are operated as a continuous corridor, these two northern lines are run separately. Because they pass through heavy-snow regions, both the rolling stock and infrastructure are designed for cold weather and deep snow. The Yamagata and Akita Shinkansen were rebuilt from conventional narrow-gauge lines, so the trains on these branches are smaller than standard Shinkansen stock.
