東北・上越新幹線は、1982年に開業しました。それまでの東海道・山陽新幹線が一体的に運営されているのに対し、初めて独立した線区として開業しました。寒冷地を走るため、雪と寒さへの装備が厳重になされています。在来線を改軌した山形・秋田新幹線に直通するため、一部の列車は車体のサイズが小さくなっています。
Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen opened in 1982. While Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines are integrally operated, these two lines are specifically searated. Since they run northern area in Tokyo, stocks and tracks are designed to be ready for coldness and snow. As Yamagata and Akita shinkansen were rebuilt from normal narrow-gauge lines, stockss in these lines are smaller than normal Shinkansen stocks.
