Series 400 was designed for the Yamagata Shinkansen Tsubasa service in 1992. Although the body dimensions are the same as conventional JR trains, it can run at 240 km/h. Series E3 later took over the role, and all Series 400 trains have been withdrawn. E926 is a test train that inspects Shinkansen tracks in the JR East network.
