200系は1982年、東北・上越新幹線向けに設計されました。0系に似たデザインですが、車体はアルミ製で性能も向上しています。JR東日本は後に鋭い前頭部の車両や2階建て車両を加えましたが、徐々に引退が進みました。2010年までには、更新済みの編成だけが特急「とき」に使われていました。
EMU Series 200 was designed for the Tohoku and Joetsu Shinkansen lines in 1982. Its design is similar to EMU 0, but the body is made of aluminum and performance is improved. JR East later added cars with a sharp nose and double-decker cars, but the series was gradually withdrawn. By 2010, only renovated trainsets were used for Toki express services.
