The Nagano Shinkansen opened in 1997. Since the Line runs through mountainous terrain and the power supply changes from 50 Hz to 60 Hz midway, Series E2 was the only type used on the line. While E2 trains on the Tohoku Shinkansen have a pink stripe, those on the Nagano Shinkansen (Asama services) have a red stripe.
