名古屋市営地下鉄東山線は、1963年に開業しました。東京、大阪に次ぐ三番目の地下鉄です。(都市内地下線としては、京都・仙台に次ぐ5番目です) 東山線・名城線は15m級の小型車体に1435mm軌間・第三軌条方式ですが、鶴舞線・桜通線・上飯田線は20m・1067mm軌間の架空線式です。鶴舞線は名鉄犬山線・豊田線に、上飯田線は名鉄小牧線に直通します。開業から現在まで、名古屋市交通局が運営しています。
Nagoya City Subway is the third-oldest subway in Japan. The first Line was the Higashiyama Line, running from Sakae to Nagoya station. Higashiyama, Meijo, and Meiko lines have a smaller loading gauge, while the Tsurumai, Sakuradori, and Kamiiida lines have a near-standard gauge. Trains on the former group have 15 m bodies, third-rail power collection, and 1,435 mm gauge; trains on the latter have 20 m bodies, pantograph collection, and 1,067 mm gauge (compatible with most surface railways in Japan).
