信越地方（長野・新潟）の鉄道です。1997年の長野新幹線開業に伴い、信越本線の横川〜軽井沢間（碓氷峠区間、66.7‰の急勾配で知られる）は廃止されました。しなの鉄道・えちごトキめき鉄道など第三セクターに移管された路線があります。上越線では115系・E129系などの近郊電車が運用されています。

The 1997 Nagano Shinkansen opening led to closure of the Usui Pass section (famous 66.7‰ gradient) and transfer of lines to third-sector operators like Shinano Railway and Echigo Tokimeki Railway. The Joetsu Line operates commuter EMUs including Series 115 and E129.
