London Underground's 1996 trains were built by Alstom for the Jubilee Line and entered service in 1997, supporting its extension and increased capacity. GTO-thyristor control of AC traction motors and wider doorways improved the design over the previous fleet. Originally six-car trains, they were lengthened to seven cars at the end of 2005 and subsequently adapted to new signalling, with automatic operation established throughout the line in 2011.
