Britain's underground railways continued developing after the Metropolitan Line opened in 1863. Initially, rectangular tunnels were built using cut-and-cover construction, but from around 1890 circular tunnels built with shields were adopted to allow greater freedom in route alignment. To save construction costs, the tunnels were small, and trains were built with rounded upper bodies to fit their loading gauge. This shape led to London's underground railway being called the Tube. The Tube lines currently use trains designated 1967, 1972, 1973, 1992 and 1995/1996 Stock. Types up to 1973 Stock have nose-suspended motors and pocket sliding doors, while 1992 Stock onwards have cardan drive, inverter control and externally mounted sliding doors. The original account expects replacement of what it calls the Bakerloo Line's 1967 Stock from around 2008.
