The world's first underground railway was London's Metropolitan Railway. Subsequent extensions, new lines and mergers produced a Circle Line with other lines branching from it. Built using cut-and-cover construction, these lines run around the outer parts of central London. Further extensions into the centre were instead made with the smaller-profile lines called the Tube. Lines built before the Tube are called Surface Lines. All Surface Lines except the East London Line now connect with the Circle Line and have through services; their operation seems similar to Osaka's Loop Line. Trains are broadly allocated by line: A60/62 on the Metropolitan Line, C69/77 on the Circle Line and others, and D80 on the District Line. All have nose-suspended motors, but their interiors have been refurbished and are clean. New trains called S Stock are apparently due to be introduced on these Surface Lines from 2009.
