D78は、1980年に営業運転を開始したロンドン地下鉄ディストリクト線の電車で、郊外へ伸びる主要区間の輸送を担いました。大型の車体に対して車輪はチューブ用車両と同じ小径のものを採用し、各乗降口が片開き扉であることも外観上の特徴でした。更新後も長く使われましたが、S形への置換えで2017年に地下鉄での旅客運転を終了し、一部の車体や機器はVivarailによる本線用車両への改造に再利用されました。
London Underground's D78 entered District Line service in 1980, carrying passengers on its principal suburban routes. Despite their larger subsurface bodies, the trains used small wheels of the same size as Tube vehicles, and single-leaf sliding doors gave them a distinctive appearance. Underground passenger operation ended in 2017 after replacement by S-series trains, but some bodies and equipment were reused by Vivarail to create trains for the mainline network.
