E531系は、常磐線用に2005年に登場しました。交直流の機器に一部セミクロスシート車を持ち、上野・土浦間の415系・E501系を全面的に置き換えました。最高速度は130km/hです。本系列により、常磐線での二階建てグリーン車の運用が始まりました。2010年現在、300両が在籍し、日本最多の交直流車として活躍しています。
Series E531 was introduced for the Joban Line in 2005. Equipped for AC and DC electrification, with semi-cross seating in some cars, it completely replaced Series 415 and Series E501 between Ueno and Tsuchiura. Its maximum speed is 130 km/h. This type introduced double-deck Green Cars to the Joban Line. As of 2010, 300 cars were in service, making it Japan's largest AC/DC train fleet.
