1995年に登場した E501 系は、209系の交直流版です。機器はシーメンス製インバータが採用されました。10連・5連各 4 本で増備は打ち切られました。E531系の登場により、土浦以北での運用に就くようになりました。トイレの設置、インバータの更新も行われ、5連は終日、10連はラッシュ時を中心に使用されています。
Series E501, introduced in 1995, is an AC/DC version of Series 209. It uses Siemens inverters. Production ended after four ten-car sets and four five-car sets. With the arrival of Series E531, the trains came to operate north of Tsuchiura. Toilets were installed and the inverters renewed; the five-car sets operate throughout the day, while the ten-car sets are used mainly during rush hours.
