E331系は2006年に1編成だけ製造され、2007年から京葉線で試験的に営業運転を行った通勤電車です。14両の短い車体を組み合わせ、隣り合う車両で台車を共有する連接構造と、歯車を使わない直接駆動電動機を採用しました。
The single JR East Series E331 train was built in 2006 and began experimental passenger service on the Keiyo Line in 2007. Its fourteen short cars used an articulated arrangement with shared bogies and direct-drive motors without gearing.
