1999年に209系950番台が製造され、TIMS情報伝送とIGBTインバータの技術を試験しました。のちにE231系0番台に改称されました。2年間の試験の後、三鷹から千葉までの中央・総武緩行線用に合計30編成、300両が投入されました。付随車のうち1両は片側6扉です。
In 1999, EMU 209-950 was built to test TIMS information transmission and IGBT inverter technology, and was later reclassified as E231-0. After two years of testing, a total of 30 trainsets (300 cars) were delivered for Chuo-Sobu local services from Mitaka to Chiba. One trailer car has six doors per side.
