The Joban Line changes to AC electrification from Toride, but because AC/DC trains are expensive, many DC-only trains also operate between Ueno and Toride. Series 103 remained in service here later than elsewhere in Tokyo, but was replaced by Series E231 in 2003. The long fifteen-car formations are notable for coupling and uncoupling during operation. Two shades of green in the stripes distinguish them from the deep-blue AC/DC trains.
