209系500番台は209系0番台より車体が幅広く、E217系に似ています。E231系0番台とともに、中央・総武緩行線の103系、201系、205系を置き換えました。E231系との違いは前面の色（E231系は銀色、209系500番台は白色）とパンタグラフです。また、E231系には6扉車がありますが、209系500番台にはありません。
Compared with series 209-0, EMU series 209-500 has a wider body, similar to E217. Along with E231-0, they replaced EMU 103, 201 and 205 in Chuo-sobu local services.
