(2005/9/4 , 2006/02/27)
Roslagsbanan is a suburban railway in northern Stockholm. It originally opened as a private railway between 1888 and 1906. Its gauge is 891 mm, and it was electrified in 1895. In scale, it would probably be classified as an interurban railway. It became municipally operated by SL in 1972, but poor track facilities and the lack of a direct city-centre connection delayed modernisation. Replacement by buses was considered, but opposition from residents along the line ensured its survival, and trains were replaced between 1990 and 1995. The routes start at Stockholm Ö, described here as North Stockholm. There are two junction stations along the way, and express operation is provided south of Djursholms Ösby, where trains from all three routes converge. The new trains are designated X10p/UBxp, with motor-car numbers starting at 201 and driving-trailer numbers at 121. They normally form three-car cMc-T-Tc sets. Despite inverter control, the X10p motor cars use nose-suspended motors because of the narrow gauge. (4 September 2005, 27 February 2006)
