The 500 Series Shinkansen was designed for high-speed services on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. Its sharp nose and high-power motors enabled 300 km/h operation. Technically, the 500 Series was a major achievement, but its rounded body made the interior less spacious. Compared with the earlier 300 Series, the time saving was limited, so only nine 16-car trainsets were built. They were later reassigned mainly to Kodama services on the Sanyo Shinkansen.
