The ER2 was a DC suburban train built chiefly at Riga between 1962 and 1984 for Soviet railway networks, including Latvia. Its redesigned entrances accommodated both high and low platforms, overcoming an important limitation of the earlier ER1. Motor and trailer cars could be arranged in different train lengths to suit demand, while a cab redesign in 1974 replaced the rounded front with a more angular shape on later production vehicles.
