811系はJR九州初の近郊形電車です。福岡市の通勤輸送向けに設計されたため、本州で使われる直流電源には対応していません。登場時には前面デザインが独特でしたが、現在では813系や817系と比べると、やや地味な存在になっています。
Class 811 is the first regional trainsets of JR Kyushu. Since it is dewsigned for Fukuoka city commuter traffic, it does not support DC power supply (used in Honshu). Although its front-end design was unique when it appeared, the series is now rather unimposing compared to Series 813 and 817.
