Ostkreuz means 'east cross' and is the Berlin station where the Ringbahn and Stadtbahn intersect on different levels. Like Akihabara Station in Tokyo, it is a multilevel interchange, but it also has several connecting tracks for through trains in various directions, making it a large, complicated station. It opened in 1882, and much of the station's structure has remained as it was when built in the 1920s. This gives it a distinctive atmosphere recalling the S-Bahn before the war and before reunification.
After the war it belonged to East Berlin and was used by many residents of the surrounding high-rise apartment buildings. Despite plans for improvements, construction had not yet begun. The Ringbahn and Stadtbahn platforms are busy throughout the day, but platform A, used by through trains between the Schönefeld Airport direction via the Ringbahn and the Spandau direction via the Stadtbahn, has few waiting passengers and feels rather neglected.
