143形は、旧東ドイツが243形として導入した4軸電気機関車で、1982年の試作に続き、1984年から量産車が納入されました。最高速度120 km/hで、東ドイツの電化路線の旅客・貨物列車に使われました。統一後は旧西側の地域列車やライン・ルールのSバーンにも進出し、東側の機関車が西側の近郊客車を牽く姿が見られました。
DB Class 143 originated as East Germany's four-axle DR Class 243, with a 1982 prototype followed by production deliveries from 1984. Its 120 km/h maximum speed suited passenger and freight services on electrified routes. After reunification, many locomotives moved west to regional services and the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn, pairing eastern locomotives with western suburban coaches.
