Thirty years after the world's first underground railway opened in London, Paris also acquired an underground railway. Compared with London's practical Underground, it features artistic design. Entrances have Art Nouveau and other decorations, while arched ceilings and spacious tunnels create an elegant atmosphere. Called the Métro, it played an important role in the Paris Exposition of 1900. A system using rubber tyres running on steel plates alongside the rails was subsequently developed and introduced on several routes, including Line 1. Network development continued, but rubber-tyred operation had many problems, and later new lines reverted to steel wheels. Similar train designs are used on both rubber-tyred and steel-wheel lines.
