Sm4 is a new suburban electric train manufactured for Finnish State Railways (VR) from 1999. No new electric trains had been built for 18 years since 1981, but 30 trainsets appeared together in preparation for the opening of four-track sections between Helsinki and Leppävaara in 2001 and between Tikkurila and Kerava in 2004. The design was by Italy's Fiat, but by the time of manufacture it had merged into France's Alstom, so the trains were built by Alstom. European trains generally have steps at the doors because platforms are low, but Sm4 provides step-free access by using a low floor between the bogies. The electrical equipment is on the roof, covered by white housings. Both cars have a powered bogie towards the cab and an unpowered bogie towards the coupling. Maximum speed is 160 km/h. Further purchases have been decided to be a new type, perhaps Sm5, so the current fleet is expected to remain unchanged.
