The Copenhagen Metro opened in 2002 and was one of the newest metro systems in Scandinavia at the time. The S-tåg network was considered sufficient, but it had no lines running through the city centre. The Metro connects the city centre and major stations. Trains run fully automatically with no drivers or conductors.
