房総地方の特急に用いられていた183系の老朽化に伴い、2004年にE257系500番台が投入されました。「あずさ」用の0番台と共通の、貫通型先頭車を両端とする 5連を組みます。普段は京葉線・総武線・内房線・外房線を走りますが、ラッシュ時には通勤ライナーとして、新宿や品川にも顔を見せます。
As the Series 183 trains used on Boso limited expresses aged, Series E257-500 was introduced in 2004. It forms five-car sets with gangway-equipped driving cars at both ends, sharing that design with the 0 subseries for Azusa. It normally runs on the Keiyo, Sobu, Uchibo and Sotobo Lines, but during rush hours also appears at Shinjuku and Shinagawa on commuter liner services.
