E257系0番台は2001年に特急「あずさ」「かいじ」へ投入され、183系・189系を置き換えました。9両の基本編成に2両の付属編成を増結できる構成で、2019年に中央線の定期特急運用を終えた後、多くは改造を受け「踊り子」などへ転用されました。
Series E257-0 entered Azusa and Kaiji limited express service in 2001, replacing Series 183 and Series 189. Nine-car main sets could couple to two-car add-on sets; after regular Chuo Line limited express duties ended in 2019, many trains were rebuilt for Odoriko and other services.
