201系は電機子チョッパー制御を使った画期的な通勤車として、中央線を中心に運用されてきましたが、E231 系の投入に伴い、緩行線で使用されてした黄色の車両が京葉線に移籍しました。京葉線では 103 系に変わる主力として活躍しましたが、205系、209系、E233 系により順次置き換えられました。
Series 201 used armature chopper control and served mainly on the Chuo Line as an innovative commuter train. With the introduction of Series E231, yellow trains previously used on local services moved to the Keiyo Line. They became a principal type there, replacing Series 103, but were subsequently replaced in stages by Series 205, Series 209 and Series E233.
