The Kiruna iron mine in Sweden is still an active iron-ore deposit. Ore produced here is carried across the fjord region to Narvik in Norway or downhill to Luleå. The route has successive steep gradients and heavy iron-ore loads, so powerful locomotives have long been used. IORE is a new locomotive introduced from 2000. Although its maximum speed is limited to 80 km/h, its tractive effort of 1200 kN makes it the world's most powerful electric locomotive, according to an LKAB news release. By comparison, EH500 has 240 kN. With IGBT inverter control and an output of 10800 kW, it is reportedly capable in theory of starting a 6800-tonne train on a 66‰ gradient. It was manufactured by Bombardier, with design in Switzerland and manufacture in Germany. Its most striking feature, I think, is its length. Two single-cab units, each with six powered axles, are coupled back to back, giving a total length of 46 m. The distance between the bogies is surprisingly long, and it is almost twice as long as Japan's EH500, with more than twice the output. Further purchases are expected to replace ageing Dm3 locomotives.
