The Kiruna iron mine in Sweden is still an active iron-ore deposit. Ore produced here is carried across the fjord region to Narvik in Norway or downhill to Luleå. The line has successive steep gradients and the cargo is heavy iron ore, so powerful locomotives have long been used. Dm3 is a rod-driven electric locomotive manufactured from 1960. Its three bodies are permanently coupled, each with four powered axles. The riveted bodies and rods give it an imposing appearance. Output is 7200 kW and tractive effort is 940 kN. Acceleration and maximum speed were sacrificed for tractive effort; although it falls short of the latest IORE, this is still almost four times the EH500's 240 kN. More than 40 years after introduction, maintenance is complicated, so increasing withdrawals are expected.
