5500系は1959年、日本初の冷房付き通勤電車として登場しました。各車に75 kWのモーターを4基備え、110 km/hで走ります。1961年に7000系が登場すると、目立たない存在になりました。支線運用に適した系列でしたが、最終的に2005年に引退しました。
Series 5500 were introduced in 1959, as the first air-conditioned commuter train in Japan. It has four 75kw motors in each car, achieving 110 km/h. After series 7000 appeaer in 1961, they were in a unspectacular position. The series suit for branch Line services, but finally withdrawn in 2005.
