Riga's Tatra T3 trams were four-axle, high-floor vehicles manufactured in Czechoslovakia, with the city's principal deliveries dating from the 1970s and 1980s. The unidirectional Soviet-export T3SU incorporated adaptations for colder conditions and an enclosed driving compartment, becoming a long-serving part of urban transport. Rather than replacing all the cars immediately, Riga modernised existing vehicles, including conversions to T3a in 1999–2000 that extended the usefulness of their original bodies.
