2000系は1974年に営業運転を始めました。運転台は日本では珍しい中央配置です。片側2扉の車両で、主に福岡と大牟田の間の特急に使われました。8000系の導入後は急行用に改造され、その後引退しました。
Series 2000 entered service in 1974. Its cab has a central-control layout, which is unusual in Japan. The trains had two doors per side and were mainly used on limited express services between Fukuoka and Omuta. After Series 8000 was introduced, they were converted for express services and were later withdrawn.
