JR西日本223系0番台は1994年に関空快速用として登場しました。丸みを帯びた前面とステンレス車体、2列と1列の転換クロスシートが特徴です。阪和線から関西空港線や大阪環状線へ直通する列車に使われ、後には2500番台も加わりました。
JR West Series 223-0 was introduced in 1994 for Kansai Airport Rapid services. Its rounded front, stainless-steel body and 2+1 reversible transverse seating distinguished it from later Special Rapid versions. It worked through trains from the Hanwa Line onto the Kansai Airport and Osaka Loop Lines, later joined by the 2500 subseries.
