JR西日本221系は1989年に登場した近郊電車で、3扉と転換クロスシートを備えています。関西本線の大和路線では大和路快速などに使われ、大阪環状線へ直通する列車も担当しました。白い車体と大きな窓が、黄緑色の国鉄形通勤車とは異なる外観を作っています。
JR West Series 221 was introduced in 1989 with three doors per side and reversible transverse seating. On the Yamatoji section of the Kansai Main Line it worked Yamatoji Rapid and other services, including through trains onto the Osaka Loop Line. White bodies and large windows contrasted with the light-green JNR-designed commuter fleet.
