221系はJR西日本スタイルを確立した車両です。1989年から製造され、117系に代わり新快速の運用に着いたほか、同線の快速や関西線の大和路快速にも入りました。最高速度が130km/hになったことから、現在は新快速の運用からは撤退しており、さらなる223系の増備による他線転属も計画されているようです。
Series 221 established JR West's distinctive train style. Built from 1989, it took over Special Rapid duties from Series 117 and also worked rapid services on the same line and Yamatoji Rapid services on the Kansai Line. Since the maximum operating speed became 130 km/h, it has now withdrawn from Special Rapid duties, and transfers to other lines apparently are also planned as more Series 223 trains are built.
