1995年から製造された5500系は、高い加速度を持つ普通列車用の電車です。初期車は阪神・淡路大震災で被災した車両を置き換えました。阪神で初めてインバータ駆動の電動機とボルスタレス台車を採用した形式で、計26両が阪神本線で使われています。
Series 5500, built from 1995, is designed for local services with high acceleration. The first batch replaced cars damaged in the Great Hanshin Earthquake. It was the first Hanshin type with inverter motors and bolsterless bogies. A total of 26 cars is used on the Hanshin Main Line.
