Dresden's tramways began with horse trams in 1872 and electric operation in 1893. The network uses 1,450 mm gauge, slightly wider than standard gauge, and combines street running with segregated track. Tatra cars inherited from East Germany were progressively replaced by low-floor articulated trams from 1995, followed by Flexity Classic vehicles from 2003.
