Like other large cities, Paris needed rail links to its suburbs. Whereas London extended its existing Underground into the suburbs, Paris built entirely new lines through the city centre instead of extending the Métro. These are the RER lines, which use large trains and provide fast services through the centre with fewer stations. Their high capacity and speed make for comfortable commuter transport.
