After MF77, RATP tested the unusual BOA prototype. Instead of two-axle bogies, it had a separate bogie for each axle and 12 m bodies. These results led to MF88, developed as a new generation of Métro train. Its design differed greatly from MF77, and its large windows made it feel very open. Wide gangways were provided between cars, and its bogies had a single axle. MF88 was introduced on the independent Line 7bis. No further single-axle trains followed, however; after the type referred to as MD88 in the original, MP89 was built with rubber tyres and conventional bogies. MP89's design was based on MF88 but gave a stronger impression of speed. MP89 replaced all the MP59 and MP73 trains on Line 1, and a driverless version was also introduced on the newly opened Line 14.
